The Red Lion pub/restaurant with rooms is a quaint low rise stone-built pub surrounded by the picturesque village of Hellidon, Northamptonshire. It is the sister to The Castle at Edgehill.pub with rooms and both to the Free Spirit Pub group.
It has seven bedrooms, and though we didn’t stay the night, we did get to dine there.
Ambience
As we entered The Red Lion we were greeted with a tremendously warm welcome by the staff and a greeting with a tentative sniff and eye-up from their resident dog, Percy. Apparently, this cute pooch came with the building.
Overall the spacious restaurant though traditional in some ways – there is a lovely log fire, it is as bright and convivial as the service – a huge shout out to Jorg whose comedic banter was incredibly entertaining.
Food & Drink
The menu is interesting and to kick off we opted for duck cakes – balls of soft shredded duck in sticky, sweet soya sauce and stuffed mushroom. Both went down very well.
For mains, we had a hand pressed burger with fabulously executed fat chips and chicken schnitzel and garlic butter served with fries. Both were gloriously flavoursome. The cheesecake came highly recommended and we shared the huge slab that arrived between two of us.
Wines are plentiful – we chose a South African shiraz – Tall Horse- for its fun fruity flavours. There are also cocktails, and locally brewed ales too such as Hook Norton best bitter and Cotswald Pale. You can check out their menus here
Verdict: The Red Lion offers a tasty night out using locally sourced ingredients. If you are in the area, make this your pit stop.
