Highcliffe House in Lynton, Devon is a bed and breakfast establishment that is first and foremost all about a good night’s sleep in a beautiful bedroom followed by a fantastic breakfast. And hosts that cannot do enough for their guests.
We were warmly welcomed by Richard while enjoying a Devonshire cream tea (jam first) and then taken to our lovely bedroom – the Myrtleberry – with stunning views overlooking the seafront of Lynmouth.

This property is ideally situated as it is within walking distance of all the attractions in both Lynton and Lynmouth. When guests are not out exploring the delights of the two localities that border on Exmoor they can relax in one of three reception rooms – the Drawing Room, the Sitting Room and the Lounge.
Hosts Robert and Richard have visited more than one hundred different countries and love to tell their guests about their fascinating travels and to take them on a journey illustrated by their personal collection of paintings and souvenirs that decorate their home.

Accommodation
Six guest rooms and all different but everyone is furnished to a very high specification and very cosy. Our room, Myrtleberry, is the only room with a balcony and we had wonderful views across the town of Lynton below and out to sea. The bed in this room is the most luxurious I have come across in holiday accommodation and the pillows were just heavenly. Sadly, manufacturer unknown.
Every necessity was provided – from an assortment of toiletries to an assortment of teas on the hospitality tray.
Facilities
The house features a drawing-room, a lounge (the bar is in this room) and a sitting room. There is also a conservatory featuring the dining area where breakfast is served every morning. Sunny weather can be enjoyed by guests on the outside terrace. WiFi is free of charge throughout the house.

Food and drink
Breakfast here is not just a meal here it is an experience. Guests have a time slot that maximises the experience as it ensures everyone does not arrive at once and Robert can give each table a very personal experience – a chance to discuss the day gone by and the day ahead. Menu choices are made the night before – a chance to compile one’s own full English breakfast of individual items. The most popular dish on this menu is the Berry Bowl – succulent blueberries, raspberries and strawberries that can be added to some homemade muesli or granola. A special treat is the yoghurt parfait – another speciality that is offered to each guest at their first breakfast.
The breakfast service is complemented by a coffee and tea menu and served on one of a collection of thirty different retro dinnerware sets – a different set each day.

Highcliffe House is very close to the centre of Lynton which features two museums, an art and craft gallery and some lovely walks on Hollerday Hill and in the Valley of the Rocks. Lynton is connected to Lynmouth by a cliff railway – for those who do not fancy the short but steep walk to the seafront. The attractions on the seafront include Renish Tower and the Lynmouth Flood Memorial Hall that commemorates the great flood of 1952. It is also the start of a walk through a gorge to Watersmeet a local beauty spot where two rivers meet. The town verges on Exmoor, a national park of extraordinary beauty.
Getting There
Lynton & Lynmouth is a very popular seaside resort in North Devon most easily accessible by car via the M5 and then following either the A39 or the A361 before joining the coastal route. The narrow, winding lanes are typical of this area of Devon. There are trains and National Express buses to Barnstaple and Taunton, the nearest large towns. In the summer there is also a bus service to and from the Minehead terminus of the West Somerset Railway. The area is well served by local buses.

Highcliffe House has a fabulous location and is not only an ideal base for exploring Lynton & Lynmouth but also Exmoor National Park and offers accommodation and hospitality that thoroughly deserves a five-star rating.
